Dear David,
We purchased our home when our children started high school, and now I have several grandkids. I’ve been able to manage the maintenance so far, but am finding upkeep more difficult since I lost my spouse a few years ago. This winter has been a real turning point. The neighbour who helps me clear my snow is no longer able to do so. I’ve arranged for a temporary solution, but it’s costly and not sustainable long term. I feel like a change may be necessary, but moving into an apartment doesn’t feel right and I’m not ready for a retirement home. What are my options? – STILL YOUNG AT HEART
DEAR YOUNG: This is not an all-or-nothing moment. You’re experiencing a transition, and there are several very good paths forward. One option is to stay in your home while reducing the maintenance burden. If your house still feels like home and your primary challenge is physical work, it may be time to move from occasional help to something more reliable, as you can only call in so many favours. A professional, year-round property maintenance plan that covers snow removal, lawn care and minor repairs can remove a lot of the stress and uncertainty, especially through the winter months.
If downsizing is a more manageable option, it doesn’t automatically mean moving into an apartment. There are excellent alternatives across our region, including condo townhouses with exterior maintenance included. These types of condos offer independence and privacy, without the demands of maintaining a large property – someone else will cut the grass and shovel snow to your door. Many people choose this type of home as a solution when they are not yet ready to consider a retirement home.
Our region is home to several age-friendly communities that don’t feel like traditional retirement options. They are designed for independent lifestyles, include maintenance, and have plenty of options to keep members active and social. Often, these feel like regular neighbourhoods.
Another choice may be to plan now and move later. You don’t need to take immediate action in order to make the right move. Exploring options at your own pace may bring clarity and peace of mind. Some people find the relief they’re looking for once they have a plan in place.
PRO TIP: Spring is on its way, which makes this an ideal time to start exploring your options. Let your choices be guided by things that are important to you, whether that be proximity to family and grandchildren, maintaining independence and privacy, keeping costs predictable, reducing physical strain, or living somewhere that feels right at this stage of life. There is no single answer that works for everyone, and the step you take doesn’t have to be permanent.
When my clients start this journey, I often take them on a quick tour of my favourite local communities. When people see some of the great options we have available, it tends to put their mind at ease and removes fear of the unknown. #Advice #AskDavid #TheNegotiator
